As we all know, an apple a day keeps the doctor away. But, what if apples are not exactly our favorite fruit? How are we going to avoid the doctor then? If you are like me, you’ll find that you love baked apple desserts such as apple pie or apple crumb cake, but you are not exactly running to the produce section of the grocery store to buy apples as an everyday snack. What if there was a way to make apples taste more delicious without sacrificing their health benefits? Well, I’m here to deliver the secret to this. My baked apple recipe includes a few simple healthy ingredients with no sugar added! Finally, an apple dessert that we can feel good about.
Here’s everything you’ll need:
The clear liquid is almond extract. You’ll also need honey. The amount of honey depends on your personal taste. I love honey so I used quite a bit while making these (about 1/2 a cup). I also used red delicious apples for this recipe. You can use other types of apples if you prefer.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, 176 degrees Celsius. The first step in making this recipe is to mix the milk, cinnamon, and almond extract in a small bowl. The mixture should look something like this:
Now, you need to place the apples in the mixture and cover them all with the cinnamon mixture. I did this in groups. Add about 1/4 of the apples to the cinnamon, cover with the cinnamon mixture, and repeat.
Once all of the apples are covered with the cinnamon mixture, place them on a lightly greased pan. I’m not going to lie – I used butter to grease this pan. I know, I know, butter isn’t healthy. You could easily substitute the butter with some non-stick cooking spray if you would like.
Before placing the apples in the oven, drizzle honey all over them. The apples seemed to absorb the honey rather quickly so I recommend using more than you think you need.
Place the apples in the preheated oven for about 7 minutes. Remove them from the oven, flip them and move them around. Then, add more drizzled honey on top. Place them back in the oven for another 8 minutes or so. When the apples are done baking, drizzle more honey on top of them and allow them to cool for about 10 minutes or so.
These apple slices taste delicious on their own, or, on top of some vanilla ice cream. They definitely taste better warm, but are also, delicious when they are cold. I went from not wanting to eat any apples to eating all three of these apples in one day after making this recipe!! Unlike similar recipes, this does not include any added sugar so you do not have to worry about losing the health benefits of this delicious fruit.
