When we moved into our house, our bathrooms had no storage areas and that is not an exaggeration. A while ago, I believe it was in November, my husband made this amazing storage ladder for our bathroom based off of some pictures I found on the internet. It turned out way better than I imagined, and I absolutely love it. Now, we have somewhere to store all of our bathroom necessities. He even made a drawer on the bottom so that no one could see the not so pretty things that we need to store.
I always had plans to paint this ladder, but decided to wait until the weather got nicer since we would have to bring the ladder outside to do so. Finally, the weather is nice and we had the opportunity to paint. At first, the ladder was just white, but we felt that it needed a little something more. Alas, it turned into this:
Now, storage ladders are great but who says they have to be boring? With this post, I am going to walk you through, step by step, how to revamp your own storage ladder to create a colorful piece of furniture to compliment any room. You are welcome to use my same ideas or to become inspired with your own revamping personality. So, let’s begin:
1. Choose complementing colors.
I have always wanted a beach themed bathroom so choosing colors for my storage ladder was quite simple. I chose a neutral white base coat and 3 different shades of blue to paint with. When you are choosing the colors to decorate your storage ladder, consider the room that it will be in and pick your colors accordingly. Also, if you are using multiple colors to paint, make sure to do a test run on a piece of paper to ensure that they will all go together nicely. If you are wondering how much paint I used for this project, let me tell you: a lot. I used four cans of white spray paint and one can of glossy spray paint for the base. For the blues, I used acrylic paint and two entire 2 oz. bottles of each color.
2. Create a pattern.
To truly revamp your storage ladder, you may want to consider creating a pattern with your different colored paints. There are endless possibilities about how you may want to place a pattern on your storage ladder so this gives you the chance to truly be creative. I went for a stripes pattern, which you can clearly see in my pictures. If you choose to create stripes as well, make sure you plan ahead of time what colors you will be using and how large you want the stripes to be. Additionally, I will suggest using painter’s tape to create crisp paint lines.
3. Be precise in measurements.
This is a particularly important step. No matter what type of pattern you are creating, you will want to be precise in measuring where all of your designs will be placed. I measured everything I was going to paint and marked each stripe with a pencil before I even began painting. Yes, this took a long time. However, it was definitely worth it in the end to do this. Here is an extra tip: if you want to ensure that your lines are straight, use a level tool to draw the lines instead of a ruler. I cannot tell you how frustrated I was getting when I was using a ruler because my lines were coming out crooked. Finally, my life was so much easier when I started using the level. I got perfect lines every time.
4. Use tape or ribbon to create accents.
Here is a secret: I have never used Washi tape before completing this project! After painting the stripes on my storage ladder, I still felt I needed to add a little something. I considered using ribbon but I decided to go with the tape since I wanted to try it. I was really happy with the results. It also served to spice up my project in just the perfect way.
5. Choose the right accessories to decorate.
Ah, while the storage ladder is utilized for storage and convenience purposes, it can also serve as a display for decorations. Of course, the decorations can really serve to complete the look of whichever room your storage ladder is in. I am dedicating my entire top shelf of the storage ladder for decorations (since I cannot reach up there). However, I still have not finished picking out the perfect decorations to place on my storage ladder. I did, though, find a few nice baskets for towels and all of our toiletries. Also, I discovered that the side of my storage ladder is the perfect place to hang the letter “C” I made with sea shells (hey – I’m thinking about a post for that, who is interested?). When I finish my decorating, I will update this post with another picture!
