Long distance travel can be awesome. It’s a great opportunity to see more of the world and to see something totally different. When we go on short-haul breaks, a lot of the places that we visit are a lot like home. When you cross the world, you see something more. You get to experience completely different cultures and ways of life. You get to learn new languages, eat exotic foods and meet wonderful people. For many of us, long-haul trips don’t come along too often, and when they do, we are keen to make the most of them.
But, there’s no denying that long-haul travel is uncomfortable. Even with modern planes and transport making it more entertaining and comfortable, sitting on a plane for an extended period is never going to be fun. You may also struggle with jet lag and aches and pains. You’ll almost certainly spend at least the first day of your vacation feeling worn out and out of sorts.
Fortunately, however, there are plenty of ways to make long-distance travel more bearable, so that you don’t waste much of your precious vacation time feeling off.
Book a Hotel
Planes are able to travel much further without refuelling nowadays, so you don’t necessarily need a layover or plane change during your long-haul trip. But, that doesn’t mean that you want to extend your trip by attempting to travel to your final destination as soon as you get off the plane. If you are staying somewhere far away from the airport, this last leg of your journey is often the worst. You can always do this on your return home too if it makes things more comfortable and easier.
Heading on a long distance trip in your best clothes, your skinniest jeans or your tightest top is a mistake. You’ll be uncomfortable and sweaty. You might even be a little smelly by the time you arrive. Instead, dress for comfort. Flat comfy pumps, compression socks, loose bottoms and a cotton t-shirt, with a hoodie for comfort and warmth, is perfect.
Don’t Forget Your Earplugs
If you want to feel good by the end of your flight, the best thing that you can do is get some rest. This isn’t always easy on a busy flight. So, pack some earplugs, a flight pillow and even an oversized scarf that you can use as a blanket. You might even want to take a sleeping pill.
When you are awake, try to move around regularly. Stand up and go for a short walk up and down the plane every hour or so. Do some stretches and even throw a few yoga poses in the aisle. Then, when you get off the plane, run on the spot to get your blood pumping, and stretch out as much as you can.
Even with sensible clothes, you might feel like hell after hours on a plane. Pack some baby wipes, deodorant and even baby powder and dry shampoo in an easy to reach part of your luggage so that you can freshen up a little when you land.
